That's What I Think About That

WOW... Yeah, almost a year since last post. I had such a weird '07 I don't even want to recap, but I'll do a quick run down. New builds: dual density, carbon fiber rails, sandwich composites, sandwich composites with carbon fiber rails, on and on. The boards are going unreal. Sales were a little slow last year, but so far '08 is looking stronger than ever. Went to Minnesota. Under the lousiest of circumstances I think we had the best time possible. I love my family so much. Miss you uncle David!! That was basically what you missed. NOW, I've been waiting for a serious DOOZY to get the ball rolling on this blogger again. Well tonight was the perfect one. Let me paint a little picture for you. Some of you know that we had a failed attempt at bringing a second dog into the family. Yeah, yeah, bummer deal, but at least I know Opal found a good home. Well in the process Otis moved out the the factory permanently. Don't feel bad for him, he absolutely loves it out there. He has all his toys, treats, bed and all that. He really loves it. And like most self employed guys, I get to work at 7 and work until 7 so he gets plenty of attention and whatnot. So there's that on Otis the shop dog. So right now Nicool has 2 major honeydo's for me. We're going to finish out the tile (yeah, we:) in the living room and paint the guest room (AGAIN!!). Waiting on some mushroom colored grout to come in so this Sunday we'll paint. I worked a regular Saturday for me and came home for some encheladas and out to the Depot. Depot and Dollar store for rollers, nothing major. Pretty nice Saturday. I decide to go by the shop and let Otis out one more time since we're right down the road, plus wanted to show her some of the cool new boards going through. Let the little sh**& out to do his thing, and he doesn't come back. That's really weird because he's pretty "military" and comes right back for a treat or throw the ball or something. But he's gone. We're yelling for him and all, and I decide to get in the truck and go down the service "road" behind the shop where he loves to run. Nicool goes into nag-mode and is telling me that I'm going to get stuck. Whatever. It's a big truck, never gets stuck, blah blah I don't even hear it. The weather is so ugly right now. Low tonight is 30, and it's raining. Just plain nasty. And I'm in my brand new Christmas gear, down to the New Balance socks. I'm not getting out in the weather for that *%(#$*&& dog!! So I go down the trail a little bit, and decide not to go any further. There's palmetto-pine forest on one side of the trail and swamp on the other. I'm backing out and pretty much end up in the swamp. No biggie, I know the drill, rock her back and forth and we'll come right out. But I start SPINNING right off the bat. I'm already pissed, and Nicool's just eating it up with a spoon. Laughing her ass off at me: "I told you we were going to get stuck, take your jacket off before you go push" I was bitter. Anyway, get out and I don't wanna get into the swamp and push. Grab a piece of ply and stick it under the tire. She gets into the driver seat (couldn't open the door, had to crawl over the arm rest, I was in the swamp!!) and gets ready to gun it. I give the signal and just get absolutely destroyed. Not just mud. Not just rainy day mud puddle old mud. I mean smelly swamp crap. Nicool is losing it. Luckily the guy next to me is a tow truck driver. Oh forgot to mention it's already 9:00 and everybody's gone home. My friend Al is a mechanic at another shop next door. He's pretty much always there if you get my drift. So I go bang on his door and get him up to pull me out. THANK GOD FOR AL!!! Took a few but we got her out. Now I owe Al some serious beer. Back to the stupid dog. Otis comes flying around the corner finally to check out what this crazy mess is all about and why I'm covered in swamp. I come so close to man-punching the stupid dog, but control myself. I just grab the collar and lovingly guide him into the shop. It's all dark, but he looks funny and he's all greasy, not just wet from the rain. YEP, he found something D-E-A-D dead. He stinks so frikkin bad. You dog owners know what I'm talking about. Pungeant, rotten, disgusting, nastiness. So here goes this mess. I've stripped the jacket, it's 30 frikkin degrees, these jeans don't really fit so I'm all bent over washing this dog in the rain, in the freezing cold crappy rain, with freezing cold rain going down my crack. It sucks. All this time Nicool is still just eating it up. She's in the bedroom right now laughing. I swear, sometimes if it wasn't for bad luck.........

So just got done with a really good Surf Expo for once. Usually I'm in and out in less than an hour and thoroughly disgusted with the "industry". This time was different. My good friends at FCS invited me to put one of my new boards in their booth. So, for the first time in 12 years I had some expo-exposure. It was cool. Thanks again Mike, Billy, and Ron!! I decided to take some blanks to the show, and maybe do a shaping demo in the shaping booth if there was room. Honestly, I was SO nervous!!! Really not that many people came by to check it out, but I still had the butterflies. Couldn't hook the i-pod up with the cool mix I had for the demo, the racks were super wobbly, the Brittney Speers headset didn't work so I couldn't talk, etc. But it came out really good and was over before I knew it. I was worried about cutting into the next guy's slot. I think I busted it out in like 45 minutes. Stewart was a champ, and I left the camera in the truck like 10 miles away, he made a mad dash and snapped some pics for me. After that I took one of the new blanks around the show on parade. That was really cool. I showed the blank off to a bunch of other shapers around the Expo. Everyone was really stoked on the blank. I got a bunch of orders for our new blanks and got to meet so many of my heroes. All the big name shapers said the same thing: "I don't think I can run this on my computer." my response was the same: "THESE AREN'T MADE FOR THE COMPUTERS!" Ha Ha... It was a really good show. Then it got a little out of hand as Expos do, compounded with my helper Stewarts birthday AND Gabe just making the WCT AND Papercutt playing at the party, it got pretty fun. At one point, one of my old neighbors, this little girl who weighs ninety-nothing got BRAVE and tried to hoist my fat but up!! That was a dumb idea as we both wiped out in the middle of a sold out party!! Not fun and pretty embarrassing! Nicool thought it was hilarious when I told her, though. Oh well, I won't get into those stories any more. Gotta get back to work. Check the pics. The board we built for the show is a sick one. It's my new board, 1# EPS core, H*) Divinycell rails (stringerless) with a corecell composite deck. I still need to weigh it, but I'm guessing it's 4 pounds or less without fins and tailpad.

FIRST BLOOD!! I'm totally battling this mouse in the shop right now. Well, my Dad says "you know the second mouse always gets the cheese!" so I might be battling mice or mouses or whatever. But it started the first day of 2007. I took Nicool to Universal Studios for the new year. I was pretty foolish thinking to myself that lines would be short and everybody in Orlando would be too busy to go out to the fireworks. WEll, if the locals stayed home (which I don't think was the case) half of the Latin world and most of Europe made up for them in attendance. I'm trying to say it was packed. It was super fun, and I'd do it again but back to my rat. I came in the shop to check emails and get an hour or so in while Nicool napped on her birthday, the 1st. I noticed some funny tracks in the foam on the shaping room floor. I'm used to geckos, monster roaches, plenty of snakes, even my neighbor's little chiwawa (I don't know how to spell that little half dog) but these tracks were different, until I followed them to where the foam got deep and I saw the unmistakable tail drag!! YUCK!! I HATE RATS!! You might read this and think my shop is disgusting, but we back up to a bunch of woods and an abandoned warehouse to the other side. There's critters here. So I put it out of my head and got some work done. The next day a few of the boys stopped by to lend a hand moving some stuff around and I offered to make sandwiches. Sure enough, the rat had taken his share of the bread first!! Now I'm grossed out. Don't touch my food!! So I got three traps. A big rat trap, since I'm sure he's a ten-pounder, and a few mice traps just in case. The smaller ones are cool, you load them with peanut butter, twist 'em open, then they snap shut and you never see the animal, er rodent. No blood, no looking at the dead rat, just dispose of the trap. The rat trap is the real deal. Guillotine style baby. Take that and all that and that too. So I went a few days without a taker and was considering switching from Peanut Butter to the old faithful cheese. Then yesterday I was in the bathroom and who pops his head out to say good morning?? My ten-pounder is more like 10 grams, he's no big threat I assure you. But he's still varmin. So I finish my business with one eye on the suspect, then stick Otis in the room with him thinking I've got him now. I seriously locked the dog in the potty with the mouse. Well, no go. I gave him a couple minutes, I had my money on the dog. I opened the door and kicked the basket he was hiding behind and he shot out of there!! No way was Otis going to catch that mouse. He slid behind the desk, making for MOST UNCONFORTABLE computer work yesterday. Well, I set the traps again last night and I think I got him. He's a tough one though. He went for the peanut butter on the guillotine. There's blood on the trap, but no mieces and no pieces. Maybe it got his tail, and he's such a bad ass he went and sewed it back on. That's what I think. Hopefully he's gone but I kinda doubt it. I'll post more when I finally get him.

Yup, just got back from Oklahoma, Pardner. It was actually way cooler than I thought. Nicool and I went up for Spanksgiving, along with my sister Jen. She met us on our layover in ATL headed for Dallas. Well, I found one thing out for sure. Those stupid "Airborne" things for not getting sick in airports is NOT a chewable!! I popped one in and Nicool goes: "you're supposed to dissolve that in a BOTTLE of water!!" and I freaked as my mouth totally over-foamed! I just swallowed hard, probably the worst thing 'cuz it wrecked my stomach for the rest of the flight. Good thing I've got a belly or I mighta popped. So we got there and it was soo good to see the P's after almost a year. We went to downtown Ft. Worth to check out the Stockyards and daily cattle drive. That was so cool. They don't just call 'em longhornes!!!! This is the Wednesday before Thanksgiving and we still had to drive "an hour or so" to Oklahoma, yeah right. Roads were packed but we had fun anyway. So Oklahoma is pretty cool. We went to this big state park to "deer hunt" with binoculars. It's hunting season and the white tails know to go to this huge state park where they're safe. I was thinking about Lance the whole time. We spotted about 40 white tails, only one big buck though. He was BIG maybe a 8 or 10 point, but he was skittish and dipped as soon as we got close. The rest just chilled, not caring about us at all. Jen and I rode on top of the Jeep and got a great view of the whole park, until Dad got brave behind the wheel and almost threw me off. Just kidding Dad, I know it was the road's fault:) Next big adventure, we went to check out Turner falls, about 10 miles from their house. It's a sick set-up; natural falls, chrystal clear water, and RAINBOW TROUT!!! We paid our overpriced park entry, and I spotted a huge rainbow on the first bridge. Then there was this lady with a full stringer of the little guys!! That was the last straw. You know me. We all loaded back up and split for Wal-Mart, 5 fishing lisences, a barbie and a spider-man cheap pole, a can of corn, and it was on. We didn't kill 'em at first, and I was getting bummed, but the bite turned on and we got a nice catch for dinner. Dad fired up the barbie stream-side and we bottomed out on fresh rainbows and corn on the cob. It was sick!! All in all Oklahoma was unbeleivably cool. I can put the pressure off Mom and Dad to come home to Florida. I can fully understand planting some roots up there...

Here's my excuse for not posting in MONTHS!! We've been working on what we're calling the Perimeter Stringer System. These boards have double 1/8" basswood stringers moved from the traditional center plaement out onto the rails. Since we began building our blanks in-house last year, this design has been our #1 goal. I'm so stoked on 'em. They look unreal, but the design improvements over center stringers are unreal. Basically, your center stringered board has all the stiffness under the stringer, this allows the rails to flex. This flex in the rail results in the board twisting under a load (in your turns) making for unnatural curves and flattening out concaves. The PSS boards retain "true under load" outline, profile, and bottom contours. Plus, the PSS boards have a flex-back where as when the board is put under load the stiffer rails directly flex back into position, giving the rider a sense of spring out of turns. They really gain speed in turns! The boards are also much stronger, not only from doubling up the stringer, but placing them on the rails as a dampener where most major damage comes from. We can also engineer the blanks for rider profile and different board designs. The tool we use can cut in perfect 1/2" increments from 1/2 out to 2 1/2 inches. A lighter rider would get the best performance having the stringers closer to the rail, where a more powerful surfer would need them further from the rail. Enough tech stuff, they're sick. I've been on mine for a few months and Cullen just got back from putting one through the ropes down in Mex. I gotta get back at it.
Peace out..

Is Nicool stoked right there or what???? She didn't want to grab him, so I had to try and hold it out and take the pic. So, as you can guess from the fishing pic, it's been FLAT!! Well, we had a small run of mediocre surf so some would argue with me, but mostly flat. I've been fishing. Yesterday I jumped my first tarpon out of the "new" boat. Jumped, not landed, but I'll claim it. I'll get one tomorrow!! When I finally found the fish Capt. Greenie was already out there and hooked up! Go Greenie. I'm so stoked for Tommy and Greenie, busting into the fishing guide scene up here. As for boards, there is some pretty good Poly foam showing up now, so anybody who's been hesitant to try the Epoxies (you're blowing it, but..) there's "regular" foam now that's pretty good, if not better than the Clark. I'm shaping some today. As for designs, I've officially jumped on the quad bandwagon, and have to brag that mine rides pretty friggin' good!! You'll have to try one. Either in the retro fish style, or the high performance "Stretch" style. I've basically widened the tail on the Wizard, and can do either a swallow or bat tail, both ride good. What else?? We've been busting our @#$ to get out of some of the excess space I rented, expecting the foam apocalypse that never came. I'm kinda stoked to reconfigure the shop, at least it's good for a thorough spring cleaning (that's where those were!?!?!)....School's back in for Nicool, so I'm up again. I really enjoyed just beign lazy all summer, waking up late and having coffee with our "Saved by the Bell" morning re-runs. Time to tighten the screws in time for Hurricane Season, up by 6:30, replace coffee with redbull and get 'er done.

That's my teamer Justin Lacrosse going straight up on the new EPS/Epoxy. All the boys had their way with this board. The general consensus was that the float was the only noticable difference from what everybody's used to. That's really good news for me. So I've been slacking for so long on updating the blog...Hawaii was sick. Maui is absolutely beautiful. Unfortunately the surf sucked. Hank (my father in law) wanted to explore this hippie nude beach (classic!!) and there was actually a sick little reef working right there so I surfed with this naked hippie, it was hillarius. Hank was working me, "are you going to invite your new friend over???" just working me. It was pretty funny. We basically snorkelled every day for hours. No complaints there!! There were turtles everywhere, tons of fish. My favorite were these grouper, all black with white spots and brilliant blue fins. They were sick. Oh, can't forget about the whales!! I guess we were at the tail end of humpback whale season. One of the craziest things I've seen. Just LAUNCHING, you could see them from miles away. One day Hank and I were coming in from snorkeling and were talking to this guy on the beach. He was from VIrginia Beach, a manager at one of the resorts in charge of events and stuff. He was telling us about the whales and goes: "yeah, just a few weeks ago you'd just look right out there" and right when he pointed out a giant humpback launched like free willie or something, just crazy perfect timing!!! I know that guy will be claiming that one for the rest of his life!!! Nicole and her Mom missed it, I don't know if they even believed the story, but the next day we saw a family of 'em cruising so we were validated. All in all it was a sick trip, but honestly now that I've been with Nicool I don't know if I'll ever feel like travelling that far again. I really miss Costa Rica, and need to go see the boys in Nica someday. That flight out to the islands is just so rediculous to me, I can't stand being in that little seat for that long!!!! I have to tell you about yesterday. Nicole is super into the boat. Sundays are boat days. So last week we're getting ready to go out and I think we're charging it, going off the beach for cobia and all. And she LOADS UP THIS PINK LAWN CHAIR!!!!!!!! Here we go. That's just to warm you up. SHe likes the boat, but gets over fishing super fast. She wants to get her tan on. So yesterday I "forgot" the lawn chair and it was beautiful so we pushed off the beach. The bait was super close to the beach, and we got enough for the day in one cast, they were thick. I caught a small shovelnose shark, the first shark Nicole had ever seen up close. She got all amped!! It was small enough for me to grab and let her pet it. Then it was on. We pushed out to the barge and caught a few fish. Then Andy called and told us to go out deeper and look for cobia. At that point I just couldn't beleive that Nicole had come out this far with me, and expected to be shut down, but she was 'BOUT IT!!! I mean, she jumped up on the cooler and held on to the dock rope you know? Just on the scout!! She spotted a six-foot barracuda and we circled it for a minute, and the next pogie pod was unreal. She goes "there's sharks all over the place" but the "sharks" were actually huge cobia!!!! It must have looked like a three stooges episode!! We were just running around the boat, bumping into each other, dropping stuff, just GEEKING OUT!!!! I'm cracking up just writing this. Needless to say we scared the fish, but it was such a good laugh. From then on Nicool's like: "there's a pogie pod over there, lets check that one, faster, faster, faster." She's hooked. I told her I wanted to take off today and go back, and she's just sooo jealous. I'm not going. Anyway, I gotta get to work.
